The India gate is a war memorial in Delhi built in the middle of the crossroads near Rajpath. The structure is 42 meters tall and 9.1 meters wide covering the area of 306,000 square meters and is one of the largest war memorial in the country. The India gate is also known as All India War Memorial. India gate was designed by leading war memorial architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. The whole structure is made up of yellow and red sandstone. The India gate is also the ceremonial ground for Republic Day. 

History of India Gate

The India Gate, initially named All India War Memorial, was built to pay tribute to the 82,000 troopers of the Unified Indian Armed force who tributed their lives battling for India in the British Domain in World War I (1914-1918) and the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919). It was embraced as portion of the Majestic War Graves Commission (IWGC) started by the British Royal Command in 1917.The establishment stone was laid by the going to Duke of Connaught on 10 February 1921, at 4:30 PM, in a military  ceremony attended by individuals of the Indian Armed force as well as the Royal Troops. Architecture of India Gate

India gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the top war commemoration architect at that time. A part of the IWGC, he outlined sixty-six war commemorations in Europe, counting the Cenotaph, in London, in 1919. Cenotaph is the primary British national war dedication raised after World War I and was commissioned by David Lloyd George, modern British prime minister. Although it is a war memorial, the plan is that of a triumphal curve, comparable to the Arch de Triomphe in Paris, France.
